William Ronald de Matteson reports the Matteson Historical Society is preparing a larger 8000 square foot space at 1450 Oakwood Lane in the north wing of the Matteson Community Center for a May opening. Volunteers work 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays cleaning, painting, and readying exhibits including items from the Dettmering tavern dating to the 1800s. The project includes revarnishing display cases and AC installation funded by a $20,000 upgrade. the space will host a museum and a community meeting room.
Tinley Park couple David and Gudrun Dorgan adopted two boys from an orphanage in Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan. Niels Gennady Dorgan, 3, and Daniel Damir Dorgan, 19 months, arrived home January 6 after a winter trip to Moscow. David quit his Chicago law firm job to care for them and they chose European Adoption Consultants, which works with Eastern Europe and former Soviet states. letters from the orphanage showed Niels’s cleft palate and Daniel’s rickets, conditions easily treated in the United States.
IDOT announced a 45 mph speed limit on Cicero Avenue from 167th to 175th Street, down from 50 mph, as city officials push for safer cross streets and plan mountable medians. The project, costing about 1.1 million dollars, includes medians south of the I-80 overpass to Flossmoor Road, with state paying 275,000. Local officials cite traffic safety and development concerns while lighting improvements at 179th Street remain unfunded.
