Ex-death row inmate ordered into drug treatment in Chicago Heights
Verneal Jimerson, 43, free on bond since Jan 6 awaiting a new trial, tested positive for marijuana and cocaine leading Assistant State Attorney Bob Milan to seek bond revocation. Judge Sheila Murphy kept the $25,000 bond and ordered Jimerson into drug treatment as the case moves to March 6. Jimerson was convicted in 1985 and 1986 for a double murder and rape linked to the 1978 slayings of Carol Schmal and Larry Lionberg. The Illinois Supreme Court later ordered a new trial in 1995 after findings about a key witness’s credibility.
