Volunteers chip away at Frankfort trail dream

On a bitter Sunday volunteers cleared invaded shrubs between Wolf Road and 116th Street in Frankfort Township. The Old Plank Road Trail aims to span 26 miles from Park Forest to Joliet on a former Penn Central right of way. William Zales, regional steward, says the group has worked 15 years to restore native prairie, noting remaining railroad ties mark the old line. James Kabat, another volunteer, says invasive vegetation had overtaken much of the prairie as Penn Central stopped land upkeep.
