Downstate Democrats Fight Plan to Shift School Aid

Downstate lawmakers warn a suburban drive to shift 45 million in state education aid would cut funding for many Chicago and downstate districts while boosting a few suburban districts. ISBE figures show 70 districts outside Chicago would lose, 22 suburban districts would gain, with the largest gain at 7.2 million for Doug Hoeft’s 66th District in Elgin and the biggest loss at 977,429 in Jay Ackerman’s 89th District. Leaders urge cross‑partisan action to block the measure before a House committee postponed its hearing.
