Boot camp offers offenders second chance in Cook County
Special to The Star reports on Cook County boot camp near the jail opened in 1997 as an alternative to prison. About 44 participants have finished or remain in the eight month post release program with 10 percent rearrested and 12 percent returned to jail. Supporters like Sherrome Walton say the program saved his life as he works, plans marriage, and aims to be a counselor. Critics such as James Austin and Michael Mahoney question long term impact and jail overcrowding relief, citing lack of long term studies and limited scope.
