Park Forest police announce the arrest of 19 year old Christopher Abernathy in the murder of 15 year old Kristina Hickey. Abernathy attended Hickey's funeral with injuries and offered condolences to her mother. Police cited a full statement from the suspect and ongoing investigation.
Matteson village board on Monday deferred any formal move to recognize Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 163 as exclusive bargaining agent for Matteson police officers until after January 1 1986. FOP cites 28 members and seeks wages hours and conditions along with a no strike clause while village officials await changes from Illinois Public Labor Relations Act and HB 1529. The action came as trustees also approved increasing the parks and recreation advisory commission from six to seven members to coordinate a new community park project at Notre Dame park.
The Supreme Court upheld Prairie State College in the clash over Albert Piarowski's eight stained glass windows. Five abstract pieces and three nude works prompted complaints, leading the college to relocate the exhibit rather than destroy it. The ACLU supported Piarowski, arguing the move violates First Amendment rights and constitutes a heckler's veto.
District 162 teachers show relief at the move to paired schools but fault the reorganizing method. Independent evaluator Jeri Nowakowski presented survey results at a board meeting, with 69 teachers responding and 90 percent saying students and staff are adjusting well.
Rich Township High School District 227 board accepted a life safety bond purchase with LaSalle National Bank at 7.7 percent interest, approving a sale of 4.55 million dollars. The board also authorized leases for two 10 passenger vans at 263 dollars per month with a 50 percent penalty on early termination, and praised Rich East football coach Robert Lombardi after a 12-1 season ending in the Class 5A semifinals.
