The Matteson School District 162 board faced a tense meeting as it defeated a plan to keep grades K through five next year and agreed to study legal issues for a November referendum on a paired school system. About 100 attendees urged action, with a special session set for April 28 to decide on a binding referendum and possible final vote.

Village President Mark Stricker and all trustees were served with a summons in Cook County Circuit Court over the refuse collection contract. Slager and Schick, Ltd filed the suit after losing the bid to Star Disposal, which has supplied service for 30 years. The board had reversed its approval of Slager and Schick and awarded to Star Disposal following a resident survey. The case adds to a federal grand jury probe asking for documents related to the contract. Trustees face May 15 to answer. Stricker calls the suit an annoyance.
