An old farmer narrator recalls a tale of a boastful man who taunts others from a tree. Neighbors labor upward while the talker stays perched, finally falling when his wife clings to him. The piece ends with a moral about trying again.
Prince Charlie a Clydesdale valued at $3000 turns violent after years of calm. He mauls sheep, breaks free from a strong yard, and chases people until Grip the mixed breed dog intervenes near the Bradway farm. Parker resists killing the horse despite officials urging humane end.
In a rural chase near Copperknoll slashing Prince Charlie charges the Bradway family while gathering blackberries. Grip the dog intervenes heroically, saving Mrs Bradway and Ruth from the attacking wolfhound before being fatally wounded. The cost of damages is covered by Mr Parker.
A jealousy dispute leads Ed Fair to kill his wife and brother in their home. Tuck Posey intervenes, is shot, and brained by Posey with an axe as Mrs Fair fetches it. Both Fair brothers die. Posey likely to recover. Coroner’s inquest names Posey and Mrs Ed Fair as responsible. The case ties to a string of prior fam ily tragedies in the area near Prince William and Warrenton.
A farmer at the Hermitage road scene during the state fair chased a panicked horse through a crowd of women and children and killed it by gripping its nose and throat. The animal had frightened at an automobile and endangered bystanders before the man stepped back into the crowd and vanished.
Richmond special report states five governors will participate in the program of the National Prison Association meeting. They will make addresses at the gathering, highlighting policy and reform themes.
The governors attending will include Claude A. Swanson of Virginia R. B. Glenn of North Carolina N. B. Broward of Florida Franklin Fort of New Jersey and Hoke Smith of Georgia. They will address prison reform and crime education initiatives and discuss related programs.
At the annual meeting of the Norfolk and Western Railway stockholders all the old officers and directors were reelected. Directors were authorized to purchase the Lynchburg Belt Line and connecting railway the West Virginia Southwestern the Pocahontas and Western thatto and the Big Stony railways.
Richmond special reports Captain John Cussons of Glen Allen Va announces in a local want column he seeks no goods services or charity. He says he has given up development plans and hosting travelers evangelists and free lunch pilgrims and simply wants a rest. The notice implies he has been imposed upon by land buyers and others.
Lucy Mitchell a white 40 year old woman who killed 17 year old Minnie McBryde daughter of Franklin County farmer James McBryde was moved from Rocky Mount to Roanoke jail for safekeeping after lynching threats. She testified the quarrel over a trivial matter ended with her striking Miss McBryde with an axe while serving as a domestic in the McBryde home.
Agnes H. Thornton sues Merchants and Miners' Transportation Co and Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for 3000 dollars claiming she bought a through ticket from Newport News to Parkersburg and was forcibly ejected from a B and O train in Washington causing mental suffering and subsequent injury. The case was transferred to the federal court here for trial on motion by the Baltimore and Ohio.
A large cat leaped at a boy in a tent, sinking claws into his neck. The crowd panicked with screams, attendants restrained the cat by the neck and forepaws, goats were used to hold it, and the boy’s wounds were dressed.
General Thomas T. Munford appoints Mrs. Ol a Mahone McGill and Miss Kate Dudley Staples to represent the Department of the Inspector General at the Grand Camp of Confederate Veterans meeting in Charlottesville on the 20th inst. Mrs. McGill is sponsor and daughter of the late Gen. Wil hines McGill.
