K. D. Uzzle editor of Onancock, a Black newspaper figure, convicted of inciting a riot in August, wins a writ of error in the Supreme Court claiming error in instructions and lack of material evidence. He remains jailed at Hampton.
John W. Cummings died at St Vincent's Hospital from a head wound believed to be inflicted by a highwayman. He was found unconscious near his home in North West Norfolk County and brought to the city for treatment.
Thirty tin box makers employed by the American Can Company walk out in protest after five Greeks are hired. The strikers accuse the foreigners of filth and low wages. Isaac Marcus, the firm’s manager, says he will not discharge the Greeks and fears violence as police guard the plant. About 200 other workers reportedly back the strike in solidarity.
Richmond reports a Chesapeake and Ohio detective pursuit ends with Lewis Sedlisty, a Russian farmer, leaping from a moving train near Gordonsville after assaulting a woman. He sustains a sprained knee, a deep forehead gash, and other bruises, then is rearrested at a farmhouse while seeking help.
W D Barlow a Richmond based expert accountant died suddenly in a Norfolk office. Heart disease is given as the cause. He was fifty five years old.
Newport News special. Mrs Nannie B Baker charged with murdering her newborn infant was held for grand jury in Police Court.Judge ruled Commonwealth weak and set bond at 300, which was posted.
Heavy weather prevented farmers from handling tobacco for market, reducing Lynchburg sales to 17 800 pounds for the week. Market totals fell short of normal activity.
Obituaries report Harry Douglas Pleas twelve years in the lumber trade dying at home in Varina District. Mrs Angle, wife of a Varina farmer, dies at home leaving two sons and others. Alexander McCormick, Berryville postmaster for ten years, dies at sixty. once Internal Revenue Service worker and McKinley appointee. Dr. Benjamin P. Wright of Tappahannock dies aged seventy six, longtime Es sex public educator and board chair. Jacob Brubaker of McGaheyville dies at fifty two, survived by wife and three sons and a daughter. Mrs James Henry, formerly of Fredericksburg, dies in Kansas City. Mrs Lemma Price Withers of Danville, sixty six, widow of Col. E. B. Withers, dies after months of illness. survived by four children.

In Fredericksburg Douglas E K Southall weds Daisy B Faulenor at the bride’s parents’ home. Petersburg sees Ethel Gill wed Thomas James at First Baptist Church with pastors Taylor and James officiating. In Roanoke Sadie Crawford Reed joins Joel R Carlton at Trinity Methodist Church. Richmond records Mrs Jennie McPhail Welsh marrying William Robert Johnson at her mother’s home with cousin Harry St George Tucker giving away the bride. Lynchburg lists Henrietta Payne marrying Carl Theodore Goldenberg at Daniel’s Hill residence under Baptist rites performed by Rev. Dr. Carter Heim Jones.
Richmond special report details the arrest of O Augustus Wright a black man charged with fraudulent use of the mails. Detective Hal Mosmy alleges Wright ran a sick benefit insurance scam deceiving Virginia Negroes of thousands of dollars. He promoted a secret brotherhood policy offering 2 50 for 6 10 weekly sickness benefits and 100 on death. Wright kept all control and all members identity secret. In Petersburg a man named Charles Spivey aged 75 was killed after being run over by a Norfolk and Western train at Battersea.
Skeleton of a two year old was found in a chimney of a Northenst Roanoke house by a woman who had recently moved in and was cleaning. Neighbors say a woman who lived in the house two years ago and a one year old boy were linked to the case but details remain unclear.
