World's Greatest Gem Mine Sits at Yogo Gulch Montana
The United States Geological Survey reports the Yogo dike near Yogo Gulch Montana as possibly the greatest gem mine in the world. It spans about four miles on the surface and extends deep as a true igneous dike. Workable sapphire rock is estimated at 10,000,000 cubic yards and a new plant will quadruple output, boosting American gem production. The sapphires are small yet brilliant with few flaws, ranging from watch-jewel sizes to two or three carats, sometimes five or six. Yogo crystals, in short prisms, require less cutting for mechanical uses and are sent to Amsterdam for cutting.
