Fire Tax Critique Sparks Richmond Chamber Talk

Franklin H. Wentworth, secretary of the National Fire Protection Association, told Richmond’s Chamber of Commerce that the nation wastes three dollars per person on unnecessary fire loss. Cogbill and Glack Cleared In Mecklenburg Trial

In Richmond Virginia a trial of B E Cogbill and W L Clack indicted for aiding and conspiring with cashier Overbey in an embezzlement case ends in acquittal for both. Overbey, once cashier, was convicted of false reports to the State Corporation Commission and the bank failed after a large overdraft. The defense argued insufficient evidence and the judge’s instruction favored Cogbill, with Clack’s case subsequently nol pressed and acquitted.

Case against Daniel ends in acquittal in Richmond

In Richmond Virginia the case against E F Daniel president of the Charlotte Banking and Insurance Company ended with a not guilty verdict. The jury acquitted after judge Handley ruled there was no case, despite an indictment for receiving deposits while knowing the bank was insolvent. The trial drew statewide attention as the first prosecution under the statute.

Horse Driver Arrested After Horse Fails in Street Hole

Thomas Riley of 649 Second Avenue was guiding a pair near Grand and Chrystie Streets when an off horse fell into a hole. The other horse was driven into the ditch, drawing a crowd of onlookers and prompting onlooker Samuel Winethal at 67 Second Street to intervene. A plank used to free the animal struck Winethal, who was injured and Riley was arrested and held at police headquarters.

Beef Barons Extradition Denied by Governor

Trenton today announced that he would not grant the requisitions of Prosecutor Pierre Garven for the extradi tion of J Ogden Armour Edward Morris and Louis Swift the Chicago beef barons indicted by the Hudson county grand jury on charges of conspiring to raise meat costs.

State summer normal schools attract thousands of teachers with sessions spanning four to six weeks. Programs for white and negro educators run across multiple cities including University of Virginia Farmville Fredericksburg Covington and Hampton.
