Wheat and cotton futures rose while President Thomas planned an inspection trip over the Lehigh Valley. American Snuff Company shares jumped with common stock gaining 50 dollars to 200 and preferred rising seven to 96 in a brisk market movement.

The City Council of Fredericksburg voted to build a school for 700 pupils with the contract awarded to E G Heflin for 35545 dollars. Completion is set for February 15 1909. The state normal school board met there and elected Rev S J Peters president and Alden Bell secretary. Peters and J D Egeleson addressed the council. The board toured sites for the proposed school.
Investigation into a body found near the railway in Princess Anne County reveals poisoning and suggests the deceased may be a New Yorker. He appears about 45, had two artificial legs, with $1.05 in cash and two pawn tickets from a New York broker in his pockets. He had no prior record of visiting Princess Anne and was buried at Princess Anne Courthouse.
Dr J S Delamette of Western State Hospital sends samples of new indestructible patient clothing to other asylums. A patient here reportedly destroyed $7000 worth of clothing before, but since the invention he remains clothed neatly and the gear costs are reported to be cut by about $2000 yearly.
H. Hansborough, president of the Winchester and Washington Railway Company, announces immediate capacity doubling at the Shenandoah River power plant in Millville. Contracts for 50,000 dollars of new machinery were awarded to Westinghouse and Dayton Globe Iron Works. Representative Gillett of Massachusetts introduces a bill to ban bucket shops nationwide, making their telegraph and telephone messaging a misdemeanor with fines and imprisonment for operators and carriers.

A devastating blaze at the New Ave line Fort Wayne hotel kills ten, with many missing and thirteen severely injured. National Guard units assist as rescuers search the ruins, believing up to twenty may still be entombed. Guests escape via windows and ladders amidst widespread destruction.
The New Aveline Hotel sat in the city’s business center as a six story brick structure. Construction began in 1852 and the four stories were completed years later. Remodeling in 1895 added two top stories. The hotel and furnishings valued at $80,000.
Harwich reports the British torpedo-boat destroyer Gala was cut in two and sunk off Kentish Knock in the North Sea during night maneuvers with the Attentive nearby. The Ribble was damaged and returned to Sheerness with two water-filled compartments. Engineer Frank A. Fletcher perished. No other lives lost. A Britannia boiler explosion injures four severely and one slightly. ship expected to reach Portsmouth tonight.
The Yarmouth coroner ruled four drowned of twenty eight in the St Paul and Gladiator collision died accidentally with no criminal blame assigned. Gladiator Captain Lumsden testified he steered to pass starboard as St Paul swung to port and failed to blast signals. The Gladiator halted then backed, but was swept by wind and tide to Seonce Point where she grounded.
At Matteawan State Hospital for the Insane Dr. A T Baker rejects rumors that Harry K Thaw would be treated with venom from a lance head snake. He says no foundation for the story exists and notes no major change in Thaw's condition despite rumors of violent outbreaks. A separate note mentions a 310 token from Cincinnati Mineral Company in 1849 sold at Sotheby's.
After five days in Santa Barbara the Atlantic battleship fleet sailed to Monterey amid social events and a heavy social calendar. A street brawl erupted when sailors protested a $6 meal charge at 121 State Street, causing window damage as crowds gathered.
Berlin reports that Charge Affairs Garrett sent to the foreign office the invitation of the United States to send delegates to the International Tuberculosis Conference in Washington from September 21 to October 10. A German committee led by Prof. Ernst von Leyden will attend, with broad government and medical society participation. The State Department provides multilingual information with the invitation.
