A nineteen year old shepherd wooes a mountain girl at a village Christmas gathering. As a blizzard traps them, a minister teaches duty and endeavor. He rescues his flock and returns to find the girl waiting, choosing love and loyalty over a rival, amid newborn dawn.
Father Christmas voices surprise at odd small red stockings found during a world journey. The narrator notes the curious size and questions who they belong to as the journey continues.
A visitor notes Brittany’s stark landscapes and quaint habits. He observes gnarled trees, plains, thatched houses, and pigs living with people, describing poverty and stubborn traditions. He mentions seasonal foods, long wearing garments, and the enduring custom of feeding the poor at Christmas and beyond.
In Lexington a week of tax sale progress continues in front of the county courthouse as boom lots attract buyers. About 1,500 parcels are listed, with prices from five cents to ten dollars, including Glasgow and other boom towns. A syndicate led by R. Siigeby Paxton and others buys some lots, while many owners bid on their own properties. The report also covers legal notices, rulings in the Zell case, political chatter on Virginia governors’ candidates, and local incidents such as a shooting threat and a brutal murder trial.
