Virginia Western Railroad charter filed for 186 miles two-state route
The State Corporation Commission grants a charter to the Virginia Western Railroad to build about 100 miles from Highland County near the West Virginia line to Clifton Forge, connecting with West Virginia Railway at the border. The total 186 miles will traverse Mineral, Grant, Pendleton, Highland, Bath and Allegheny counties. Construction begins May 1, two years, cost around 10 million dollars. The line may join Baltimore and Ohio or stand alone, with ties to Chesapeake and Ohio, Western Maryland, and B&O at Clifton Forge, Covington, and Keyser. A New York syndicate owns the project. Clifton Forge offices, capital stock up to 200,000, president J J Stoutenburgh, others from New York and West Virginia.
