Associations in Barmen Elberfeld. Cuban Cabinet and presidential secretary resign. Haiti issues a 2 million gourdes loan. England’s miners vote for a general strike.
In Richmond Mrs Norman V Randolph president of the Richmond Chapter denies that the Daughters have given up opposition to placing the Battle Abbey on a ground near the city. The chapter demands a site that centers history and insists action to revoke any move must occur at a formal meeting. They oppose the West End Council plan and say they will suggest a preferred site to the Council.
Charles A. Adams, 79, longtime tailor at the Virginia Military Institute, died after a pistol he borrowed to shoot rats discharged in his mouth and through the top of his head. Despondent over ill health, he had lived most of his life in Lexington after a Confederate Army service. Born August 10, 1830 in Williamsburg, he was an Odd Fellow, Pythian and Episcopal communicant.
Morris Seigle, arrested after a three hour start, admits he stabbed his wife with an ice pick during years of dodging her. He was captured at New Kent Court House and held at the First Police Station. Police expect the wife to recover, and Seigle fears her anger upon recovery.
Lieutenant Samuel R. Gleaves of the U S S A is named commandant of cadets at Virginia Military Institute to replace Colonel M M Mills. A Wytheville native, Gleaves trained at VMI in 1894 95 96 before entering West Point in 1896 graduating with honors in 1900 as the sole Virginian in his class. He served three years in the Philippines with the First United States Cavalry and rose to first lieutenant. superior officers praise his record and character.
The Shenandoah Valley endures a prolonged drought halving corn yields and injuring apples and fruits, with apples stalled for weeks. Shenandoah River water runs at record lows, limiting the Millville power plant on the river from operating at full capacity.
In New Market Shenandoah County the body of Lewis A Tussing a noted farmer and sewing machine agent was exhumed to verify reports he was murdered and hanged by a chain from a barn rafter. Physicians determined the neck injuries came from a self inflicted hanging by Tai Sing and not murder.
Max Hirsh of Hirsh Brothers, running a safe stable, attacked his brother-in-law Louis Isaacs with a scantling. Isaacs died at 2:00 AM after the melee. Isaacs sister suffered a broken nose. Both men are around 30. Hirsh was bailed but jailed after Isaacs' death. Isaacs was from Baltimore and had been chief clerk at Miller's dry goods store in Washington era.
Dr. J. B. Morton of Lynchburg aged 78 was instantly killed near Lawyers when struck by a fast freight on the Southern railway. He had visited a farm and was en route to catch a train home, the accident occurring as he walked toward the station.
Mary Tarbox, accused of murdering husband Daniel Tarbox near Church Road in Dinwiddie County last May, is held in Petersburg jail for safekeeping. She will be arraigned at the September term of the county Circuit Court. Reported well connected in New York, she has engaged eminent counsel and maintains her innocence, speaking little of the crime.
Acca Temple of Richmond will initiate about 108 candidates for the Ancient Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine under ground in Luray Caverns on August 14. The caverns ballroom several hundred feet below the surface will host the ceremony as large delegations from the Valley of Virginia travel to attend.
Nearly 200 delegates gathered at the United Brethren Church in Winchester for the annual Y P C E convention. President L A Armentrout of Roanoke presided. Richard Evelyn Byrd addressed as welcome speaker, Virginia House of Delegates member. Reports by Armentrout, Rev C Crowell of Staunton, and Cora Grim of this county noted rising membership and increased labor.
Timothy Sullivan of Osborne Turnpike notices a cow not producing milk. Friday the cow wades the creek and two large carp latch to the udder, remaining until milking ends. Sullivan vows to rid the pasture stream of fish.
Winchester resident Wim. R. Smith aged 75 died at his home. A native of the county he bore a striking resemblance to Abraham Lincoln. He leaves a widow and three brothers.
Richmond records a Friday morning execution at the State Penitentiary. John Fleming, a black man from Lunenburg County, was executed by the electric chair.
A vintage advertisement touts Dr Miles Nervine as a cure for epilepsy and related nervous diseases. It cites a testimonial from W R Allison of Laversaville North Carolina describing improvements in his son after using Nervine and anti pain pills, with a money back offer if the first bottle fails. The ad directs readers to their local druggist and to Miles Medical Co. in Elkhart Indiana.
