A writer recalls visiting relations and enduring a cold, eerie spare bed. The bed sits far from others and feels like ice with rigid sheets and tombstonelike pillows, provoking fear of death, isolation, and lasting nerves until the visit ends.
A new mottled fine paper labeled granite gray originated in Newark Delaware at a paper mill and was introduced by a Philadelphia firm. It spread to New York where it was marketed as gray mat or fine English Paper at high prices and is now produced in several colors with the same mottled appearance.
A telegraph inspector uses a rat and ferret with a string to pull cable through iron tubes for inspection. The rat drags the line to the middle, then after a ferret attack resumes, ultimately guiding the line to the far end and easing the repair.
