In a moonless night by the Ribble estuary Nellie and I witness a phantom light and a grotesque shadow near the Lytham coast. A haunted legend about a murdered wife threads through eerie moans as a couple laughs off the fright from a cyclist with a dark lantern.
A Lee Street Church sermon argues Moody and Sankey correctly identify human sinfulness and Christ’s mission to save sinners. It laments political corruption, domestic tragedy, and crime, then condemns respectable churches for excluding the genuinely penitent and neglecting the hospital role of Christianity.
The speaker defends Moody and Sankey for inviting sinners to repentance and offering fellowship in Christ. He argues their work advances righteousness and holiness, uplifting souls and society. They spread the gospel as life changing power and preach Christ as salvation.
The Union Hall Association presents the first of six entertainments in Union Hall on Tuesday evening. Madame Madeline Schiller the eminent pianist and the Swedish Ladies Quartette, a distinguished corps of artists, will headline a concert expected to attract select and brilliant audiences.
Master Hy Barnard Coombs, soprano, and Master James Ward from Trinity Church, New York, will sing in East Cambridge on Wednesday evening next February 7. They travel specially for this concert and it will be the only chance to hear them. See advertisement in another column.
A society of Washington School graduates formed at F. W. Coleman home. Officers include A. B. Gibb 72 president, E. H. Downing 73 treasurer, Miss Minerva Booth 74 corresponding secretary, Charles Wright 75 recording secretary, plus eight vice presidents. About forty graduates attended. membership of seventy expected.
The advertisement on our fifth page notes Thomas E. Mosely & Co at No 169 Washington Street have begun their annual sale of shop-worn boots and shoes. Extraordinary bargains promise fine Boston goods, and the firm invites customers to visit before the year passes. George S. Merrill will greet patrons and attend to their needs at the shop.
The Cambridge Woman's Temperance Union held its annual meeting at Pilgrim church last Thursday. Officers elected: President Mrs H K Pervear. Vice Presidents Mrs G R Leav itt and Mrs S C Harvey. Secretary Mrs G C Paine. Treasurer Mrs C H Comey. An Executive Committee of ten was appointed. The organization began February 34 1876 with twenty five members and has grown to two hundred.
The Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Cambridgeport announces a course of free lectures following the Harvard and Dowse sessions. Speakers include Rev. Dr. Goldy and G. H. Tibbets, with other quality speakers to be added.
