How I Sold My Monkey and Bought an Organ

The narrator, daughter of a modest rector at Winifred Summingdale, recalls a plan sparked by her cousin Hugh to obtain a new organ for St Winifred. A London trip and a ring tailed monkey named Apollo alter family life as envy and curiosity from Sir Giles Gascoigne influence events and loyalties.

Apollo the faithful monkey tale and a willful will

A narrator recalls Apollo the monkey gifted to Sir Giles Gascoigne who dies asking for the pet’s price. Apollo pines after separation, dies in the narrator’s arms, and Sir Giles leaves the narrator as a widow by will. Nearby, Sir Giles dies and Hugh inherits, while a memory marker to Apollo is placed. A second fragment satirically presents Nasby in a 19th century Charraqua setting, detailing campaign duties and political observations about Greeley and party factions.

The Cambridge Conflagration of Politics and Treasures

An 1872 narrated scene blends festering tariff debate with personal loyalties as a speaker extols Grant, denounces Greeley, and sketches a divided house planned to host both sides. The text shifts to public notices and concerns about Cambridge street widening, municipal finance, and a congressional race focusing on Judge Richardson and Massachusetts representation.
