Traders at Chicago on May 27 saw the May corn corner surge as Patten’s faction spurred a rapid rally from 73 1/2 to 78 1/2 cents. Brokers yelled in the corn pit amid scarce supply, and Patten dismissed the corner notion while claiming he sold cash corn for the same price he paid.
A Cumberland amusement house draws good attendance despite showers. Visitors from surrounding towns come by trolley to shop and enjoy the large dancing floor and well received airdome performances. New feature Bertina performs unicycle balance stunts amid high order vaudeville acts.
Ex President Grover Cleveland suffers another sinking spell amid high humidity reports from Wall Street sources. Equitable Life and Lakewood Hotel secrecy continue as he remains under care, with recovery prospects unclear.
A Wichita Kansas dispatch reports a tornado hitting Alma Oklahoma killing four people from the Rudy family included a wife and two children. Several farm houses were destroyed and crops ruined across several miles with non fatal injuries reported. The worst damage occurred seven miles east of Alma.
An outbreak of rabies in northern North Carolina and southern Virginia reports many dog bites in the past week. Patients are treated at the Pasteur Institute as canine examinations show the majority infected with rabies. A Civil Service appointment lists Earl Pleciter of Cumberland as an Interior Department messenger, though the name is not in the city directory.
Washington society watches a witty duel as Miss Kath erine Elkins and Miss Juliette Williams both face Joseph Leiter’s engagement rumors. The two families exchange notes and comments while a public flirtation remains the talk of the spring social scene.
Carrie Nation, after her 33rd arrest, was tried in Pittsburg Pennsylvania and fined twenty five dollars or 30 days in the workhouse for disorderly conduct. She refused to pay the fine stating she’d rather go to jail than hell. An electrician testified Nation insulted him for wearing a Masonic emblem. The W C T U members collected fifteen dollars for her fine.
In Baltimore on May 27 at the General Conference of the M E church, Rev. W S Lewis of Sioux City Iowa and Rev. E B Hughes of Greencastle Indiana were elected as bishops. Lewis received 424 votes and Hughes 3417. next three were Robi McIntyre of Los Angeles Florida M Bristol of Washington and H C Stunts of the Philippine Islands.
The Pennsylvania Railroad reports the Conemaugh Division between Pittsburg and Johnstown is in operation as the last section of major improvements. The project, ongoing for years, involved massive excavation and masonry work and adds a low grade relief line from Pittsburg to Johnstown and beyond, creating two distinct track systems on much of the main line from Pittsburg to Trenton.
Former Governor Stone takes the stand in graft cases in Harrisburg. He says Cassel pressed the board of public grounds to approve a metal furniture contract before a regular meeting. Stone warns the board to reconsider and threatens protest if they proceed. Also notes on a defendant's nervous collapse and a disputed table charge. A French inventor flies an aeroplane in royal presence.
Rear Admiral A S Crowninshield U S Navy retired and former chief of the naval bureau died at Episcopal Hospital Philadelphia. Dispatches received by the Navy Department report the death. A sale of two thousand shirtwaists at one dollar is listed at Rosenbaum's at 10 a m.
Barney Sisson and Max Klegman obtained an injunction from Judge D. F. Sloan restraining Thomas Reynolds and Mike Smith from erecting stands or selling confetti at the Spring Festival at Riverside Park. They allege Reynolds breached a January contract for festival concessions and paid part of the sum, while Reynolds allowed Mike Smith to operate competing stands. The petitioners claim a second agreement exempted confetti stands but Reynolds permitted continued sales, prompting the injunction with a dissolution option on one day’s notice.
Democratic primaries select delegates tonight to county convention at Miller's Hall Saturday morning. Delegates then move to the state convention in Baltimore on June 3 and ultimately choose national delegates in Denver. Rural districts vote this afternoon except Rawlings district 6 pm to 7 30 pm. Cumberland districts vote 7 to 7 30 pm with polling sites listed.
Gloucester Massachusetts May 27 The fishing schooner Fame from this port was run down early today off the Maine coast by the Boston steamer of the Dominion and Atlantic Line. Thirteen crew members were drowned and four men were in a dory at the time. John Lark, a sailor, was the sole survivor. The dory occupants will likely be picked up by passing vessels.
A 19 year old athlete Jessie Stroyer fought a burglar who entered her brother’s home in Pittsburgh on May 27. She struck the intruder with rapid blows, knocking him to the floor before fainting. he escaped, leaving her with black eyes from a straight left jab. No clue to the thief. Also notes sale at Rosenbaum’s and city council conference on organization and upcoming appointments.
The Times corrects a banking table error from yesterday. First National at Mt Savage deposits are $240,828.17 with resources $201,770.16 as of May 14. Second National of Cumberland deposits amount to $1,961,858.20 after a nine figure total.
Kansas City reports a resumption of mining activity as 75 000 idle miners are expected back by tomorrow night following a two year agreement signed on Friday. Elsewhere John Copp of Parrittsville fell in a swollen stream and was rescued after being washed downstream. A new show opens at Riverview Park drawing crowds. A baby known as Little Andrew weighs 132 pounds at eleven months.
Weather continues very warm over the past three days with little temperature variation. At 3 PM today yesterday and Monday the thermometer showed 90 degrees in the shade. Also notes an ad for Pure Wholesome Food at Dan and Bills with an excellent regular dinner and 15 cents tomorrow. A local listing notes 27-11 Thursday at Rosenbaun's.
Evelyn Nesbit Thaw withdrew her suit for the annulment of marriage to Harry K. Thaw. Her counsel said she acted due to pressure from Thaw’s relatives and because she believes his position warrants loyalty. The motion was sanctioned by Referee Deyo with case discontinued without costs. O'Reilly added she may receive financial relief though he declined to name relatives. Seventeen children were injured in a truck crash near Pettisville, Pennsylvania, when a group of youths released a truck downhill, colliding with a standing car and causing severe damage.
