Three Lovers and a Wabash River Rescue
In Gratton a village belle Susie Jones juggles three suitors who each plan marriage. During a church picnic on the Wabash, Springer Brown and Cotton join her row. Springer’s clumsy rescue ends with mud and insults. Brown saves Susie from drowning and wins her favor with a dry apology. Susie later asks why Brown did not jump in to save her, joking about wet suspenders.

Back to the Farm The Nation Needs City Farmers
An editorial argues for rural migration not as retreat but national service. It urges city-born youth to learn farming via colleges, correspondence courses, or working with experienced farmers. It weighs renting before buying land, selecting locales from the West dry-farm districts to the Mississippi Valley, and highlights the Palace Meat Co. poultry buy offers.
