A Crusade at Phillips Excursionists Face Closed Saloons
Through the efforts of Dewey Van Ostrand a Phllips sheep raiser and real estate dealer a party of supporters visited the city. The excursion met a cold reception and saloons were closed all day Sunday to avoid prosecution. Meals were provided at the opera house by generous citizens saving the thousand visitors from hunger. An effigy of Van Ostrand and Carrie Nation appeared amid threats but he prevailed. The day featured a band contest then canceled, with prizes shared among visiting bands. The event hailed as a triumph by reformers and sparked call to continue reforms. The city hall belfry stairway was completed offering expansive views and forty new houses were under construction.
