Tol F. Cole Appointed Postmaster at Marshfield

The Marshfield post office will change proprietors as John S. Cole is appointed by President McKinley to succeed Adam Paulus who has served four years. Paulus will retire with praise, and Cole is to take the postoffice with expected smooth handover. Timing of the change is not yet known.

Barn accident injures Schuster family at Bever property

John Schuster and his 16 year old son fell from a staging while repairing a barn on the North side. The elder suffered serious injuries and the boy sustained two broken ribs after the staging broke following a planks giving way.

Milwaukee man found guilty in forgeries trial

Bradley W. Pulling was found guilty in Marathon county related forgery case. The trial in Milwaukee and subsequent hearings centered on a loan of 650 dollars secured by a mortgage on the Luepke farm. Witnesses testified to signatures and the forged mortgage. The jury delivered a verdict after about 15 minutes, with a stay of sentence granted until next Saturday.

Grange Meeting Set For Marshfield In December

J C Davis of Richfield reports the state Patrons of Husbandry will hold the next grange meeting in Marshfield during December. About 700 granges exist in Wisconsin and a large attendance is anticipated with representatives from each lodge. The event spans most of a week with talks on farming methods, dairying and stock raising by practical farmers. The aim is to lift up those engaged in farming and advance agricultural knowledge statewide.

Five on Wheels Fire At Uphams Lumber Yard

The Sre company rushed to Uphams lumber yard last Saturday night after a spark from a switch engine ignited old railroad ties left in the yard. Firefighters and nearby men worked to push the burning pile toward First Street, meeting the fire company and swiftly bringing the blaze under control as spectators gathered to watch.

Land Hunters Pass Through en Route to Taylor County

A delegation of twenty eight heads of families, all from Dane County and of Norwegian birth, traveled Tuesday en route to Taylor County. The group was represented by Mr. Chas S Riley of the Rumsey Land Co.

Land seekers form Dane county colony near Medford

Madison area delegates settle on lands near Medford taking 80 to 160 acre parcels totaling about 2500 acres. Riley located 20 families nearby as the Tuesday colony heads there. Nels E. Larson acted as interpreter. John P. Hume sold four eighties to John Egger, Martin Egger, Edward Egger, and Charles Hughes. The land lies in Richfield. The buyers are young settlers. Hughes plans to move this fall and others next spring. They came from Dane County.

New Telephone System Planned for City Network

A move to form a stock company to build a modern telephone system gains momentum. A mass meeting produced an investigating committee and over $2,300 in subscriptions. If franchised, work on a new line will begin linking with other state cities.

Late tragedy and a community fair in Moyehfield

A Merritu medicine seller, Dorn, nearly died after taking laudanum sent by his wife, then survived with aid from prayers and doctors. A Catholic fair is planned for October 26 to 28 to fund school grounds at Moyehfield, with amusements, crafts, and meals to attract townsfolk.
