Browne Opposes New Tariff in Maiden House Speech
E E Browne congressman from this district argues for tariff revision but votes against the bill as a whole. He emphasizes potatoes on the free list would hurt farmers, citing 1 060 000 bushels shipped from his city and 87 starch plants in the potato belt. He notes current tariffs protect American growers, estimating potato prices and farmer profits under a ten year period. He recalls 1912 imports and revenue from potatoes and asserts the tariff’s revenue value and protection against cheaper foreign competition.
