Poem Sparks Parole For Two Kansas Prisoners
Early this month two free men, Carl Arnold and William Harvey, will leave Lancing penitentiary after commutations by former Governor B W Houl. They were jailed for life for the 1893 murder of Kinsley mayor Kay, shot during a robbery attempt. Arnold’s poem was cited as the reason for their clemency, with authorities arguing literary merit justified release to broaden the poet’s mind.
