The initial gathering of Marshfield business leaders unified as the Chambers of Commerce, with Hon. J C Marsh and Mayor A G Felker speaking on growth and unity. Members discussed housing needs, membership drives, by law changes, and a rebranding from Civic Development Association to Marshfield Chamber of Commerce amid plans for county gains and veteran support.
At a board meeting yesterday the Chamber of Commerce elected officers for the coming years with J. C. Hastist as president C J as vice president Gue E Blodgett as second vice president Amos Roll as treasurer. Committees include Auditing chaired by AG Felker with VD Spalding and H G Hambright. headquarters committee led by T. Z Spalding with Hambright and Roll. executive secretary committee chaired by T. Z B E Felker.
Speakers urged closer farmer merchant town ties to ease perceived discrimination and boost local trade. A proposed farmers rest room with homelike conveniences was discussed to keep spending in Marshfield, plus picnics and town meetings with farmers as guests. W H Roddis advocated building and loan associations as vital to local growth amid housing shortages.
Marshfield voters cast 748 ballots in a quiet primary for United States senator with Davies winning Democratic support at 176 to McCarthy's 10. Lenroot narrowly defeated by one vote as Thompson edged Lenroot 203 to 202. Socialist Berger drew 158 votes, 76 in the First ward.
School clerks Kraus and Poi sent contracts to teachers for the 1918 19 term with some changes by the board. The senate accepted daylight saving amendments setting clocks forward one hour from March first, lasting to the last Sunday in October. Proponents claim annual savings of about 40 million dollars in lighting costs.
At a Monday Works meeting with Blodgett Normington Hisings Khalsehed and Kirschner present, Supt. E. TG. Wayts who had resigned was rehired after deliberation. The contract calls for a year at a salary of 2400 dollars. The Wayts family will remain in the city for another year.
A lively Chamber of Commerce gathering featured humorous bouts and sharp exchanges. Reeths drew laughs with his antics while Feenl defeated Witt in a swift ring spectacle. Beell claimed two straight falls.
B S Grambsch proprietor of the Palace of Sweets took possession of the Large news stand and soon will move it to his Palace of Sweets. The deal with J B Lorge closed this week. Grambsch plans to stay in the current building for two weeks longer before relocating the Lorge stand and may shift to candies and periodicals only after May 1. The Kohl building is rented to a firm seeking a better location.
In Marshfield Wisconsin on March 14 1918 E G Pors County Federal Food Administrator orders all residents to surrender any sugar over a 30 day supply to dealers with receipts mailed to him. Noncompliance may lead to investigation by United States Food Inspectors.
Isaac Stephenson of Marinette former United States senator and prominent Wisconsin businessman died at his home last Friday after a week of illness. He was 82 and valued at about 40 million dollars, reputedly the wealthiest member of the U S Senate during his tenure.
Attorney C B Edwards announces candidacy for mayor of Marshfield, opposing Henry Kalsched. Edwards cites eighteen years in the city, prior service as city attorney, and a platform for a bigger better busier Marshfield with improved roads water supply and stronger business cooperation. He stresses economic prudence and developmental steps.
Marshfield Chamber of Commerce aims to recruit 200 members by Thursday noon. Three six man teams led by C B Edwards R J Strauss and Charles M Pors will canvass. nonmembers urged to join today. cooperation praised as key to success.
Father A B Dunne of Eau Claire spoke at the Adie theater on a snowy evening to a large attentive crowd of voters. He urged prohibition with clear, clean messages while John Barleycorn faced a strong rebuke during the talk. W H Roddis introduced the speaker.
Wisconsin prepares a state wide road marking system with 8000 markers to be built of wood steel or concrete in the 5000 mile network. At a Grand Rapids highway commission meeting last Tuesday four men were named patrolmen for local systems each to be paid 125 dollars monthly plus a bond and tools. They must work ten hours daily and safeguard county property while statewide standard marking aims to unify the trunk highway system.
Marshfields mayor Al G. Felker will not seek another term on Tuesday April 2. With Felker out, two candidates enter the race for the office: Attorney C. By Edwards and Henry Kaisched, both experienced in city government.

Brewers voluntarily offer to use part of their plants to manufacture chemicals needed for munitions. Production of beer will cut 80 percent from April 1 to June 30, 1918, compared with 1917, while breweries prepare to begin war chemical production this year. The arrangement with the Stower’s is outlined in a government announcement to the War Service Committee of the United States Brewers Association.
