A party of ten Japanese laborers, recently arrived from San Francisco, are clearing a 520 acre tract near Spencer under a Madison promoter. They lack skilled tools and rely on strength, with rice as their staple. More workers are expected to join soon, amid local amusement and curiosity.
The Pittsville burglary spree ends as George Baker, alleged gang leader, is taken to Grand Rapids for trial and M. L. Ohmstead is arraigned as an accessory before Judge Hahn. Ohmstead waives examination and is jailed in default of $1000 bail. Authorities expect to recover more assets tied to a year long series of robberies at S N Baum Store and Creamery, Ottelier Standall office, A V Austin store, Pittsville Hardware Co, and Baker residence.
Mrs Senichie was sent to Marathon county asylum from Wood county years ago and escaped last August. A statewide search found no trace of her. The Wausau asylum superintendent notified other institutions but found no record of her location.
George Spencer twenty two died last Saturday at McMillan where his father R. V. Spencer is foreman at the lo nl camp for B. F. McMillan & Bro. Funeral services were conducted by Rev Pastlethwaite on Monday with burial in Marshfield cemetery. The Spencer family receives wide sympathy in their bereavement.
Roddis company crews number between fifty and one hundred at work on a new veneer factory. The 86 by 84 foot three story plant will have 50 percent greater capacity than the old mill and is slated to open about June 1 with 200 workers. Ten acres of adjoining land were donated by local business leaders in appreciation of the project.
Dr H Wahte and his driver were thrown from a cutter at the Omaha crossing Monday due to missing planking between rails. The team ran away and overturned the rig, injuring the physician who was confined to bed but expected to recover in a day or two.
Miss Zella Milligan and Mr. William Ostreich were married last Wednesday at the home of the bride’s parents on Maple Street. Rev A. Soule of the Methodist church officiated. The bride is a popular city young woman and the groom a prosperous farmer from near Bakersville. The couple will reside on the Ostreich farm south of town.
The Park Falls Herald notes the loss of a pipe plant at Marshfield may not hurt the town if it attracts better manufacturing. The editorial suggests Marshfield should seek substantial new industry and warns the location is not ideal for a heavy enter plant any longer.
Basketball fans will watch Marshfield High vs Neillsville Highs in a game at the armory on March 16. A second contest features the military teams from both cities. A dance follows until trains depart. Admission to both games is 25 cents.
Manager Saunders of Wisconsin Realty Co says prices for lots will stay about the same for builders. He calls Park Falls real estate prices stable after past booms when prices soared and the town suffered since.
The city set to vote April 2 with March 15 if a primary is needed. Aimed at avoiding costly campaigns officials consider a peaceful candidate selection. Ward elections include one or two aldermen and a supervisor per ward. Roddis Lumber party interest urged to join council, praising W H Roddis and Hamilton Roddis as capable, fair leaders.
Miss Margaret Lueckenbach returns from Sparta where she ran a millinery shop and reopens in Marshfield in her former Reily building location. She debuts a large line of fine millinery and fancy goods and plans a spring opening soon.
William H. Battis to give an impersonation of Dickens characters at city hall next Tuesday evening. The event is for entertainment with no admission charge.
The 2 cent per mile passenger rate takes effect across Wisconsin roads on Sunday. Railroad travelers save half a cent per mile, and 500 mile family tickets at $10 are valid only within Wisconsin for dependents. Tickets cover named riders, with free baggage up to 150 pounds per person, and are not valid for travel to points outside Wisconsin until an Illinois rate bill takes effect.
