Elks Honored Departing Marshfield Members Reese and Lyons
The Marshfield Elks held a Tuesday evening gathering at the club rooms to honor Edw. L. Reese and J. F. Lyons who are leaving the city. A banquet, speeches by John F. Cole, and Elks’ charms were presented as tokens of esteem. The event, with music by the Serene Regiment Harp Orchestra, marked the two long-time lodge supporters’ departure from the organization. Also noted: C. E. Blodgett reported 78 entries secured for September races at the Central Wisconsin Fair, the largest list to date, with a list of stake races to follow.

Death of Herman Artus at Seventieth Year
Herman Artus owner of the old Tom Gaffney farm north of the city died Wednesday after a short illness. He leaves a widow and an adopted son. Artus valued at about $200,000 owned a large Milwaukee business block and several fine farms nearby. Remains to be taken to Milwaukee for burial.

City council weighs curfew ordinance and jail reforms
The common council met at city hall with Mayor Upham presiding. Alderman Marx pushed a curfew plan to keep children off streets after a set hour. The board of health urged condemning jail bedding and replacing it. Postmaster Cole urged sidewalks on outskirts to gain another mail carrier. Library board report adopted. Annual School Meeting Adopts Levy and Reelects Clerk
The annual meeting of District No 1 was held at the high school Monday evening finishing within half an hour. A tax levy of 16309 dollars was adopted and 6150.27 on hand is the estimated needed for the coming year. Clerk C S Vedder was unanimously reelected with 500 dollars salary. Geologists Visit City for Central Cut Land Study
Prof. S Weidman of the state Geological Survey with Frank Lennett of Ann Arbor and R Chamberlain of Chicago surveyed land around the Central cut west of town last Saturday. They left for Eau Claire to continue related work and plan a return to complete investigations. Prof. Weidman and his wife once lived here for several months during previous field work and are well known in the city.

Fire damages West Ninth Street home of John Schlege
An early morning blaze discovered at 11 o clock yesterday on West Ninth Street near the bedding factory damaged the Schlege residence but spared the main building. Passengers returning from Neillsville alerted the alarm. The factory watchman helped organize a volunteer squad using factory hoses, keeping the fire partly under control before the fire department arrived. The cause remains unknown as the family was away.
