A severe rain and wind storm on Friday night June 28 caused major damage in the surrounding countryside with barns, fences, and grain losses. Naming Farms Law Encourages Town Votes on Names
A July 1 enactment allows towns to require farm names upon petition by ten percent of electors. If approved, by law the owner must select a suitable farm name, register it with the clerk, and post it on the premises with a board settled sign. A $10 penalty may be imposed for noncompliance. The provision aims to bring rural naming up to urban standards at light cost. Farmers are urged to raise the matter at next spring’s town meetings to gauge sentiment.
