Runaway Horse Kills Child in Marshfield Street collision

A horse hauling a wagon detached after startling near Marshfield’s Fourth Street and Central Avenue fatally struck Doris Wate, aged child of Mr and Mrs Wyna Tite, as the wagon swung toward a curb. The animal, tensed by harness, fled blinded by fear, while the boy and driver were nearby. The horse was later identified as a young high-spirited draft from Oshkosh, and the inquiry suggests harness tightness caused the kick that proved fatal. The incident drew swift sympathy from the city as rescue efforts continued for others injured and the driver’s condition remained serious.
