Fiddler hunted after alleged assault prompt mob action
Long fragmented report from Stratford area recounts a tense night when John Fiddler, a 1-year-old Black worker, was nearly mobbed after being accused of assaulting a young girl at a hotel and barn area. He fled, was later caught, stripped, whipped with a harness piece, and released into the woods with a warning. Local officials and residents debated swift punishment. The piece also notes notices about Knute Anderson’s death and other local incidents, including a case of adultery and a shooting accident.

Fire destroys Fifield business district in massive blaze
Last Thursday afternoon a fire swept through Fifield, 14 miles north of Phillips, starting in a shed behind the Clifton House. Wind from the south and west carried flames to nearby buildings, destroying three blocks and about fifty businesses. Total loss estimated at 18000 with little insured. Causes suspected as matches used by boys in the shed. The blaze also swept the Clifton House and other offices. In Marshfield, a horse trade involving Rev Sanderson drew local interest amid broader regional reports on school funding disputes and political corruption. The funeral train for William S. Mellon, Northern Pacific manager, passed through Marshfield with dignitaries and Knights Templar escort.
