Garden officials report northern Wisconsin soils and climate yield high rutabagas carrots and onions with per acre returns varying by locality. Weir brothers near Iron River claim 360 to 750 bushels of rutabaga and 300 bushels of carrots per acre. A J Uhrenhurd in Sawyer County reports 800 to 600 bushels of carrots and 300 to 1400 bushels of rutabagas per acre. Seavey Bayfield counts rutabagas up to 500 bushels per acre. onions 200 to 400 bushels. cabbage about 100 per acre. Yields on other soils confirm strong opportunities for vegetable gardening near Lake Superior and throughout northern Wisconsin.
