Colored Man Arrested For Fraud In Wisconsin

R B Montgomery a colored man claiming to be financial agent for the Col ored Industrial Orphans home at Macon Georgia was arrested in Eau Claire last week charged with taking money under false pretenses. He pleaded not guilty and is bound over to April 25 on $200 bail. Montgomery has for years solicited funds in Wisconsin for a southern institution that does not exist and has visited Marshfield at least twice annually taking many dollars. Citizens who donate to such beggars are blamed for much crime as the fraud spreads by word of mouth. He reportedly collected over $30 in one afternoon on a prior visit, mostly from prominent locals. A long jail sentence is hoped if he is convicted.
