A Glendale writer reports hot summer weather and rapid vegetation growth while detailing personal updates on Nellie Sharp and D O Martin. He critiques wartime reporting, questions German war capacity, and comments on accuracy of casualty figures and supply logistics amid World War I.
The focal registration board issued orders to prepare 34 men for the next draft. They will be sent to training camp within five days from May 25 to May 30. The board has not yet chosen the queen to accompany them. The selected men will travel to Camp Gordon in Atlanta, Georgia.
Applications for the position of manager of the public library will be received until Friday. The present librarian has resigned and applications may be submitted at the library or by any board member. The library sees steady interest with about 1100 books borrowed monthly and over 800 borrowers’ cards issued. A monthly shipment of new books is received.
Henry Abel describes two weeks at Camp Dix where recruits arrived at one in the morning and were sent to the hospital for injections. The next day they began training with a six mile hike and enjoy baseball, football, and YMCA entertainment.
The eleven jurors or school leaders failed to secure unanimous backing for merging school management. Most favored consolidation for harmony and economy, but one member opposed so strongly that the plan was dropped for now, leaving two administrations in local schools.

Clark county plans a three day Illinois Centennial celebration at Marshall on August 29 30 and 31 under the Marshall Community Club and State Centennial Commission supervision. County events include a spectacular free open air exhibition and numerous activities organized by multiple committees.

Jesse A Veach died last Tuesday in Rogers Arkansas. His body was brought home and funeral services were held Friday at the Clarksville Baptist church conducted by Rev J S O'Neal. Born April 8, 1892 in the county, he was the son of B F Veach and had been in declining health for three years. He lived with his father in Arkansas about a year seeking relief. He was a 12 year member of the Christian church. He is survived by his father four sisters one brother and many other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Sarah Doll widow of Levi Doll died Wednesday at her home north of Livingston after a long illness aged 80. She is survived by two sons and two daughters. Funeral services were held Friday at the family residence conducted by Rev J G Craig and burial followed in the cemetery.
County graduates receive diplomas and promotions across Melrose York Westfield and Orange districts. Notable names include Harry Stewart Olive France Glenn Pendleton Helen Dickerson Frances Mitchell Read Gideon Myrtle Becket and Catherine Getsert as the sequence of diplomas and scholarships continues through Felt County exams and graduation exercises.

Mrs Elizabeth Cox Hall died Monday at her Marshall home after a long illness aged 70. Funeral services will be held tomorrow with interment in Forsythe cemetery. Born in Edgar county she lived in the area and was four times married. A contingent of five recruits was sent to Ft Thomas Kentucky Friday. The list includes Earl Smith of Casey Wallace Sweitzer Charles Hughes Don Jones of Wabash township and Frank Schwartz of Dolson.
W W Connelly of Broken Arrow Oklahoma a brother of Judge Connelly of Marshall was wed last week to Miss Mae Douglas of Marshall in the Presbyterian church ceremony in Marshall.
Rev C R Dierlamm will preach the annual memorial sermon at the Congregational church on Sunday May 26. The Decoration Day address by Rev J W Richards will likely be at the Pythian Theater. Citizens may bring flowers to city hall on May 29 afternoon.
Otto Walls aged 35 was found dead Thursday afternoon in a field north of Oliver with a rifle by his side. Police consider the death accidental as he had gone out intending to shoot a hawk. Walls was married but divorced, leaving a six year old child.
