In Washington on March 22, a calm hush settles over the capital as war with Germany seems inevitable within weeks. Public sentiment sharpens against pro German factions, schools remove German motifs, and citizens anticipate a massive European conflict with American troops possibly joining.
Clinton F Weber of Martinsville township was declared insane in county court Monday and sent to the Anna Hospital for treatment.
Matthew Anacher died Monday evening at his home one mile south of Grand Turn after a long stomach illness. Funeral services were held at the United Brethren church this morning. He was 47, unmarried, and survived by his mother and six siblings.
A Friday Court of Honor session drew a large, enthusiastic crowd with four absent candidates. The Marshall Court is noted as the biggest for its town and among the best in the order. An additional class forms for Friday April 13 at Dry Buile Up Today. Wet and dry bills advance in the House as a special order. Representative Thus Be Lyon of Springfield led the dry bill push with a referendum clause. Representative Curran of Chicago proposed an amendment to call up all wet and dry bills and the resolution, which was adopted.
Herbert Wyrick born near Livingston July 23 1899 died Mar 21 1917. He leaves a father and mother a brother and three sisters and other relatives. Funeral held by Rev W T Moore at Livingston church with burial north of the church cemetery.
All township collectors except Casey and Marshall have settled with County Treasurer Fredenberger. The delinquency will be about as usual. Collections show taxes due and taxes collected, listing each amount.
The school earned current year accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools at a St Louis meeting. Graduates may enter most U S colleges without exams, with few eastern colleges as exceptions. Students took teachers’ exams last week. Roy and Harry Cropp left school early for spring work but plan to return in fall. Grounds planting planned using native trees. a walnut tree was removed for manual training lumber. Baseball and track practices are underway with expected strong teams, though scheduling is challenged by limited local competition.
J M Archer dies at home after a long illness aged 79. Civil War veteran, Confederate cavalry lieutenant, fought at Pea Ridge and Chickamauga, captured at Ringgold, later Illinois National Guard captain. Survived by wife Ardelia Balsley, three children, and numerous lodge members. memorials note his patriotism and community service.
Zion church holds Sunday school at 9 15 with Wm Abel as superintendent and 10 30 preaching by the pastor. Marshall church starts at 9 15 with Rev John Mundorf as superintendent and 7 15 preaching by the pastor followed by 7 15 prayer service on Wednesday. This is the pastor's last appointment before annual conference with benevolences due before his departure. Joseph L Buyer, Pastor.
If the proposed $60,000,000 bond issue passes, Clark county would receive a portion of four thousand miles of new hard roads. Route No. 1 would start at Chicago and run south to Metropolis, linking Chicago, Chicago Heights, Watseka, Danville, Paris, Marshall, Robinson, Lawrenceville, Mt. Carmel, Albion, Carmi, Harrisburg, Vienna, Metropolis, and communities in between.
The report claims Supervisor Pearce was extravagant in aiding the poor. Records show he is conservative with expenditures, with strict examinations for aid. Dr Pearce is praised for vigilance on the treasury and is credited with preventing greater debt under a Democratic board. A Republican board next week could curb extraneous spending.
The most important case of the term was The People vs Thomas W Anderson on criminal assault of his thirteen year old step-daughter Marie Sunderland. The trial in Robinson lasted all day Tuesday with a verdict of guilty returned the next morning.
W. D Misner of Martinsville sends a photograph from St. Petersburg showing a fishing party’s haul. Forty people caught 300 fish totaling about 1200 pounds with some fish weighing 278 pounds. He notes gardens recovering from a severe freeze and orange trees in bloom.

State law mandates annual automobile licenses. Owners who bought before April 1 1917 must pay full year’s license. purchases after April 1 are exempt exceptions. All licenses must be procured by April 16 or face prosecution. A license applied for sign does not exempt. This notice aims to warn all drivers.
A capacity crowd attended a Mon day night Hippodrome program at the Pythian Theatre for the Congregational church fund. Ches ter English as John McCormack opened with songs followed by Miss Pavlova and Miss Sullins in dance and piano pieces. The bill featured ballroom dance, a Keystone sketch, Ruth St Denis style solo, and Scale Girls with Mrs Louis Bulger directing the accompaniment.
The Martinsville circuit court heard trials including Charles Steel for rape with a 14 year old stepdaughter as chief witness and returned a not guilty verdict for him. Several burglaries and larcenies were ruled mostly not guilty. arson case and food law dispute were resolved, with appeals granted or cases dismissed. Several divorces and foreclosures concluded with desertion grounds or dismissals, and alimony awarded in one case.
Mrs Menia Hutchinson enjoyed a large birthday surprise at her Livingston area home last Sunday a basket dinner fed guests who gave her a rocker as a token of affection. The gathering included numerous Hutchinson relatives and friends with attendance from Terro Halle and nearby families.
Former Judge M. W. Thompson is critically ill at Hot Springs Arkansas after a long battle with asthma and bronchitis.
