Illinois Parents Liable Up to 500 for Childs Wrongful Act
Illinois lawmakers restrict parental immunity for unmarried minors under 19 residing at home. The Parental Responsibility Law permits up to 500 in damages for willful or malicious acts with limits for medical costs in personal injury cases. Exceptions exist when parents did not direct the act and acts by a child as an agent can exceed 500 with liability still provided by common law. The law clarifies it does not cap all damage claims and does not affect other causes of action. Also notes that many parents pay damages voluntarily and some insurance covers such acts.
