The Big Muddy River Basin including Jackson Franklin Williamson Perry Washington and Jefferson counties attracted early settlers after Britain won Illinois post French and Indian War. Figures like Geo Rogers Clark expanded Virginia claims by 1778, with settlement growth flowing from Bottomlands between Belleville and Chester. Towns developed along 1822 routes, salt works flourished, and farming became dominant as transportation improved.
