Springfield reports turmoil as Chicago mayoral race looms after primaries. The legislature pauses for April votes while lobbyists crowd the capitol and Governor Small advances river and lock projects. John W Lewis and Son acquire the Bruner grocery on the south side of the square. The deal transfers ownership and the firm name to Lewis and Son, effective after the closing on Monday.
At a Marshall council session Acting Mayor May adjourned after heated talk over a $332.02 bill from Engineer Frank L. Wilcox for light and water plant work. The dispute touched on contract figures and payments amid other actions including sidewalk permissions and a stalled tractor purchase.

Kirchner Construction Company of Kansas has the lowest bid at 38700 and won the contract to add a manual training room for 50 pupils, three 30 pupil classrooms, and a gym auditorium. Work starts immediately with completion planned by September 1 and a 68 by 40 foot gym floor seating 500 with a stage.
Deputy Sheriff Myler Faunce married Miss Edith Foster of Casey in Terre Haute on Saturday. They will reside at Marshall mid month and begin married life together.
County Collector J. W. Fredenberger distributes tax notices with an informational sheet. The printed sheet offers more details than casual street talk.
Charles L. Stults 21 of Toledo and Ruth K. Cray 18 of Toledo gain marriage license. Ralph McGinness 22 of Martinsville and Lola Carl 18 of Greenup receive license.
Henry B Bowman 71 died at Lakeview hospital from pneumonia. Born March 12 1851 in Lafayette Indiana he taught and earned AM and PhD from Wesleyan University Bloomington. He married Mary Jane Meeks and remained widowed. a memorial funded library and instruments for an Indianapolis college. Funeral at McKendree cemetery Georgetown followed by burial beside his wife.
Charles Little of Marshall was cut on the face by flying particles when the new motor car of H L Hardaway, also of Marshall, struck an excavation at the Big Four and street railway crossing on Vermilion street. The car, en route from a Chicago factory branch to Marshall, had been turned over to Hardaway for delivery. Two tires were ripped, two wheels broken, and an axle twisted. No red lights were out.
Seven candidates seek the Paris mayoralty and 16 vie for commissioner seats along with two for police magistrate in a Tuesday primary. The mayoral field includes F. C. Blackman, Walter Downing, Brock O. Luttrell, T. C. McCord, BR. G. Pollard, M. L. Rittenhouse, and A. G. Witt.
Norman Bennett plans to announce for mayor and Harry LeSeure will seek city clerk. No other formal declarations were confirmed, leaving the field largely uncertain.

Miss Ruth J McNutt known in Marshall and now secretary to Indiana University president W L Bryan refused an offer to be secretary to Senator elect Samuel M Ralston Indiana University connections seen as more desirable than the Washington post. She had considered the senator’s secretary role with its enticing salary but chose her university.
The post office at McKeen will discontinue on March 15 1923 and patrons will be served by rural route 6 of Marshall. Rural carriers on sick leave include Robert Stepp Robert Smitley Robert Taylor and Harry Johnson with Stepp still off duty. Thomas Clark city mail carrier has been on sick leave since December.
In Washington the debate centers on whether supreme court rulings require seven of nine judges or a simple majority. A new congress looms with self described radicals and progressives, but insiders expect the chamber to mirror existing power structures.
Miss Janie Bennett of Westfield replaces Miss Maude Neer as county health nurse. Neer, now married December 23, served 14 months in the post. Bennett, a graduate nurse with substantial hospital experience, steps into the vacancy left by Neer.
Supervisor Arthur Cork of Melrose township was taken to the hospital at Robinson Saturday after weeks of illness with flu. He is reported to be very low.
Dr W J Davidson president of Winds Wesleyan University spoke twice at the Methodist church Sunday in Marshall. He was brought here through Rev Pettit a personal friend of the educator. Davidson urged trained leadership to avoid the county's condition now found in Russia.
Paris won the basketball tourna ment Saturday by defeating the Kansas team noted for its spectacular play. Marshall's team had no practice venue and thus no chance to compete. The event took place at Parla with the southern half won by Robinson at Robinson. Harvey Westnitter of Michigan avenue hosted friends from West Terre Haute. Mrs. Frank Kinsel of Newton visits her sister Mrs. A R Sis.
