How the U S elects a President if no majority is reached

The House selects the President and the Senate chooses the Vice President when the Electoral College deadlocks. If no candidate wins a majority, each state casts one vote in the House for a President, needing a simple majority. The Senate then picks the Vice President from the top three electoral vote recipients. If January 20 passes without a President or Vice President, Congress can act to provide for a temporary successor.
