Dr J R Covington born August 3 1837 in Madisonville Kentucky died Friday after months of rheumatism and a grippe complication. He leaves wife Victoria Troutt eight children eight grandchildren and one brother. He joined the Christian church and was active in Odd Fellows and Masons. He loved home and faced death with faith and cheer.

Poll Tax Duty Clarified for School Officers by 49th General Assembly
State’s Attorney Jones asked the Attorney General to interpret the poll tax law as it relates to school officers. The Attorney General says highway commissioners must list able bodied men aged 21 to 50 and assess a cash poll tax of 1 to 3 dollars due by June 1 each year. Paupers lunatics and idiots are exempt. school trustees and directors are not. Section 266 of the School Law exempts officers from road work but does not exempt them from the poll tax, which is not a labor tax.
