Plan Moving of Big Grain Crops to Meet Surging Tonnage

Washington reports the Railroad Adminis tration is preparing for a record grain harvest. Winter wheat may top 900 million bushels and spring wheat 300 million, sending total wheat well above last year by 300 to 400 million bushels. The permit system, used at ports and interior markets, may be reintroduced to prevent congestion as grain moves from elevators to markets. Transportation data show nine months with 3.44 billion bushels moved and peak storage of 480 million, underscoring the need for efficient handling.
