Grain Farms Pay More Yet Erode Soil, Study Finds
Ithois College of Agriculture researchers analyzed about 500 farm records from eastern and central Tinis for 1945 47. Grain farms showed higher profits but poorer soil fertility and eroded topsoil, while the 100 most efficient farmers earned about 30 dollars per acre more than the least efficient. Beef cattle and hog farms outperformed dairy and poultry for returns, due to higher beef and pork prices and labor costs in dairy and poultry. Some cooperators rely mainly on livestock for net earnings, while others could profit by shifting to grain with a soil management program. Field staff compare cooperators to identify strong and weak spots and show how others improve profitability.

The 1947 Babb Farm test in Champaign County used 40 inch rows, 13 500 plants per acre, no fertilizer, producing 85 bushels. Further work needed to confirm exact recommendations.
