Strange Worm Must Be Eaten to Survive
A UC zoologist explains the spiny headed worm survives by hitchhiking through predators. The worm’s egg hatches only inside a sand crab, which must be eaten by a marine bird for the larva to mature. The worm’s life cycle depends on birds ingesting crabs, then birds digesting the worm capsule to release adults. The worm must lay many eggs to ensure a crab eats at least one egg that reaches a bird.
