In a rambling speech the author argues against U S entry into war with Germany. It warns of risks of blockades and foreign entanglements and urges keeping Uncle Sam out of conflict while lamenting pressures from Wilson and Bryan and the American public.
The House and Senate adjourned until March 2 as fifty four committee seats were reduced from sixty seven to thirty three. Speaker Shanahan named De Young Graham Harvey Burns Roe to a special canvassing committee. Debate decided whether to transport ballots to county seats or bring witnesses to the city. committee stance left undecided.
The Walter Burdick Chapter organized a Washington birthday essay contest at the school building Monday. The program featured The Star Spangled Banner, a Patriotism address by Rev. W H Ziegler, songs by Mrs. Don Winterrond, prize essays by Harry Handy and Ruth Noakes, a flag drill by first and second grades, and closing singing of America. Prizes were presented by Mrs. H M Janney.
Miss Minnie Kile died Monday evening after a ten day illness at John Rector on East Main Street. A native of Anderson township she was 42, survived by two sisters and three brothers. She joined Congregational church at Allright at 15 and later transferred to Marshall church. Funeral by Rev W H Zeigler was held this morning with interment in Ziegler Cemetery. She had been Rector’s housekeeper for six years.
A two story farmhouse in Orange Township occupied by Homer Blanken beker son was destroyed by a blaze shortly after noon last Friday. Neighbors discovered the fire and telephoned the alarm. About 75 men fought the flames but most of the household goods were saved including a grandfather clock over 100 years old. Insurance on the building stood at $1000.
The Marshall troop of the Boy Scouts of America held a Washington's birthday social at their headquarters Monday night. About 150 ladies and the boys' parents attended. The evening featured games recitations speeches flag signaling demonstrations and first aid work. The Scouts are praised for their proficiency and plan more entertainments for the coming season.
The nineteenth annual meeting of the Central Illinois Art League will be at Arthur Hurst studio next Monday and Tuesday. Photographers from across the central state attend to improve the craft with papers and demonstrations including air brush and works by Eduard Blum of Berlin and Chicago. Public display of pictures will be open while sessions interest photographers.
An eight quilt and relic exhibit at the Congregational church featured pieces from 1820s to 1860s and earlier. Notable displays included a 100 year old quilt gifted by Mrs Aron Jones and a 1839 coverlid owned by Mrs J L Keifer. Modern and antique works drew admiration for artistry and craft.

A county and township Sunday school conference will be held at the M B church in Marshall on Saturday March 6 from 9 30 a m to 2 00 p m to plan the year s work. State secretary Hugh Cork elementary supervisor J E Schenck home supervisor and P Shepherd teacher training supervisor will attend. All township and county officers are requested to attend.
Congregational Church reports a well attended Fathers and Sons service with men out enjoying women. Next Sunday features Gospel song and story service and a Woman's Missionary Society meeting at 3 pm. Montana to vote on statewide prohibition in 1916 as legislature advances a referendum.

The season’s first trans continental tramp appeared Friday. Julius Rath claims he is completing a world circuit started in St Louis years ago. He traveled with a small cart drawn by two dogs and bets a fabulous sum awaits him if the tour is finished.
The Friends of Caroline Brown announce the marriage of Madeline Elien Dowling to Carl Samuel Brown in Chicago on Monday February eighth, 1916. The event marks a formal union celebrated among local acquaintances and family.

A major fire struck Mount Carmel on Thursday night destroying seven frame business houses on North Market Street between Ninth and Tenth. The Baptist Church announced regular services Sunday at 10 45 a m inviting all students and residents to attend.
