A Chicago weather bulletin notes forty years of records with a maximum temperature near 28 above and a minimum 16 below zero, the mean around 6 above. It questions whether the ground is frozen to four feet or more affecting water mains.
A masked rider fired from a passing train car at engineer Davis and fireman near Liggett station east of Vandalia. The assailant fled after the driver braked the train and police suspected a maniac or revenge attack. no mail-car robbery occurred.
Marriage licenses listed include Grover Connelly and Lily B. Gustis of Orange tp, David W. Kaufman of Anderson tp and Tyola Reuratiér Martinsville, Frank Welsh and Ella Dunlap of Wabash tp, Orpha J. Thompson and Maud Naoft Wernz of Mélrose tp, Lee Bishop and Sallie Vanpelt.
The farm residence of Zane Arbuckle three miles southwest of town burned last Sunday morning due to a defective kitchen flue. Most of the family were away but neighbors arrived in time to save most of the household on the first floor. Loss paid by insurance.
The will of the late Rev Dana Sherrill Wealthy formerly pastor of the Congregational church in this city was filed at Morris Tennessee on Saturday. It disposes of an estate valued at about 100000 dollars. It bequeaths 30000 dollars to Beloit College Wisconsin and includes seven additional bequests.
A divorce case is filed against W. X. Hayes alleging desertion after a 1896 marriage in Westfield Haven. The couple reportedly had two children. A separate notice mentions a public sale to occur on Wednesday, March.
Alfred Trefz dies Friday after three years of kidney trouble. Born January 15, 1857 in Douglas township he lived in the county his entire life. He married Alice Bebner December 9 1892 and had four children two sons and two daughters one son died in infancy. He moved to Marshall in 1894 and ran the wagon yard business. He joined the evangelical church at age 24 and later the M E Church in Marshall until his death. Survived by wife three children Lydia Herbert and Charles an aging father one brother and one sister. Funeral at family home and Baptist church Clarksville with Rev Chas E B Taylor officiating burial Clarksville Cemetery.
Benjamin Franklin Craig aged 70 died suddenly Monday from heart disease after a carpentry accident at the Simpson Lumber Co. He had lived all his life in Clark County, married Julia Blair in 1887, and left nine children, six living. An inquest by Acting Coroner Thomas Craig returned a death verdict. Funeral services were held at the family residence.
John D Hightshoe born Ohio April 14 1825 died Feb 12 1912 at his Clark County home after a life as a wandering pioneer preacher. He joined the Methodist church in 1855, became a licensed exhorter in 1861 and was ordained Baptist about 26 years ago. He married Harriet Wilkens in 1853 and had 10 children, six of whom preceded him. He last preached at Mt Moriah near Marshall about eleven years ago. He leaves his wife of over 59 years, four children and 23 grandchildren and many relatives. Funeral services were held February 4 at the Ohio church conducted by Elders Cleenta and Lake with a large attendance.
The Republicans of Melrose township will meet at Melrose at 2 p m Tuesday February 27 to nominate candidates for township offices. Ruth Beat and Myrtle Record, two Charleston Women, have been elected to the taxing body. A public sale of farm stock is planned northwest of Marting on February 29. Regular services at Congregational Church include Sunday school at 9:30 and morning service at 8:33.
Dispatch from Kalamazoo Michigan reports Edward O Rigg 23 detained on a charge of stealing 103 from a friend who aided him. His father Charles C Figg of Terre Haute Illinois wept in the jail corridor as they met for the first time in three years amid reports of alleged forgeries and desertion from the army in Indiana Michigan and Ohio.
Officials from Westfield College consider moving the school and visited Danville last week while surveying several other cities. Marshall is urged to pursue the location citing better railroad facilities and overall suitability for the institution.
The Eastern finals high school basketball tournament will be held in Charleston on Friday and Saturday. Teams entered include Paris Marshall Onarga Neoga Kansas Charleston Hillsboro Greenup Martinsville Shelbyville and Homer.
Mrs Frank Davison died Wednesday at her home near Oliver from tuberculosis. Mary Stark, born near Westfield in 1884, married to Frank Davison in September 1903, survives with four children. Funeral services were held at the family residence Friday with interment in Elledge cemetery.
The communion service at the Methodist church will be held Sunday March 3 instead of the following Sunday. Regular services both morning and evening next Sunday are open to all.
Carl Stahl of Terre Haute faced charges after a one day quail hunt in the state. Game Warden Hedrick said he hunted without a license and paid a total of 55 dollars in court costs and fines in Paris last week. He paid 25 dollars for hunting without a license and 30 dollars for killing two quail.
Wilson Harlan sells his drugstore next to the post office to Robert Casteel who has served as Pharmacist in charge for some time. The transfer transfers control of the store to Casteel, with details of the sale not disclosed in the available text.

The St. Louis and Cairo divisions were charged in forty counts with keeping train crews on duty longer than sixteen hours. George Gillespie, the company’s general attorney, entered the plea of guilty. Government counsel noted an agreed penalty of 100 dollars on the first count and 25 dollars on each of the remaining thirty nine counts.
