Changes in 1967 tax rules on medical expenses

Jay Philpott, district director for Central and Southern Illinois, outlines two major changes in medical expense deductions for 1967. Taxpayers may deduct half the cost of medical insurance premiums up to 150 dollars without the 3 percent limit. The rest of the premium, plus other medical costs, are subject to the 3 percent floor. Medicare ages 65 and over face the same limits as younger taxpayers. Medicine and drug costs are deductible only to exceed 1 percent of adjusted gross income, with excess added to total medical and dental expenses and then reduced by 3 percent of income. Life, accident, and health insurance covering lost earnings are not medical expenses.
