Execution of Wirz described by witness Swan
Swan recalls approaching Wirz at the execution site and witnessing details of the hanging including the crowd’s rage from outside and quiet order inside the prison yard. He says Wirz spoke of obeying orders, was aided by priests, and kissed a crucifix before the trap door. The account covers rooftop observers paying for viewing rights and afterward autopsy notes.
