Doctor Strickland and family hear Cherry plant a swift engagement to Martin Lloyd, a mining engineer she met in warnings about age. The couple marry at once despite worries, leaving for El Nido where Martin works.
Cherry travels with her husband Martin to Fil Nido, staying at the Hotel McKinley. She feels unfamiliar fear and homesickness in a cheap room, then adjusts to hotel life as they visit the mine and meet the superintendent Mr Bates. Over days she embraces married life, shedding previous self, amid domestic routines.
Cherry endures poverty and growing disillusion in a bare mine camp with Martin while managing home life and tense quarrels. A new suitor, Justin Little, enters Anne’s circle, complicating bonds as Cherry’s nostalgia for the valley clashes with a changing marriage and a looming wedding season.
Alix and Anne watch Cherry wed and settle at a boardinghouse as she writes from far away. Cherry’s letters recount trips with Martin, tales of the Plant, and a cheerful home life, while Alix and Anne feel both pride and a pang of envy at Cherry’s apparent success.
After a long day the family returns to the valley. The daughter bursts into tears at seeing her father in the garden, clinging to him as if exhausted by travel and the hidden day of Allz's return. She recovers with a smile and tells Peter and Alx she does not know the cause of her distress.
