Prof Frederick N Duncan of Texas State University recalled his Germany stay in 1914 as war erupted. He described German fervor, foreigner reprisals, bank refusals, refugees in Rotterdam, and his own perilous flight to England and finally back to the United States.
Soldiers in cantonments favor immediate combat service over officers training. Many enlisted men eligible for officer schools refuse to apply, fearing delays to active duty in Europe. In one division 380 slots existed, but only 40 applied as rumors spread that divisions would sail before training completed.

The western railway lines are sending spare locomotives east to relieve freight congestion. The P C C and St Louis has received 17 engines from the Missouri Pacific and other western roads.
The Meriam Chronic farm in York township sold at executor's sale Monday. An 80 acre tract east of West Union went to Mr. Drake of Crawford county for 7300 dollars. The 60 acre tract with the homestead near West York was bought by John Nichols.
The Black family shared a Christmas feast featuring a roast of buffalo meat sent by Harry Black from Thermopolis Wyoming. The meat came from two buffalo slaughtered by the state game reserve warden and sold as a Christmas novelty.
Percy Cox writes from somewhere in France on Thanksgiving Day noting well housed fed and cared for under censorship. He attended an outdoor fire service and spent the rest of the day at football and other games, promising a good report from Uncle Sam.
Milo Baker of West Union refutes reports that his sister Edna Baker has broken down in health. She remains with British forces as a Red Cross nurse and recently helped evacuate 76 wounded after a German air raid. her brother Harry serves with American forces in France.
Mr and Mrs Fenton R Mathews gave a Friday evening recital in the Congregational church to benefit the public school orchestra fund organized by Mathews. Net proceeds exceeded $80 to buy instruments for the city orchestra, directed by Mathews, with Velma Jaulline assisting on piano. The program featured classical works and Irish folk pieces, ending with the national anthem to unite the audience.
James H Davison a 54 year old Anderson township farmer, accidentally shot himself Thursday afternoon while bringing cows home with his shotgun. The gun discharged while he tried to pull it through a wire fence, the shot entering his abdomen. He died shortly after Dr. Bradley treated him. Davison was a former supervisor and well regarded. He left a daughter from his first marriage and had remarried Pauline L Ditzenberger. Funeral services were held in Livingston Saturday.
Elmore Dietz died Monday at his home in Anderson township after about two weeks with pneumonia. He was 67, single, and survived by one brother and two sisters. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Marshall Evangelical church.
The York township Sunday school convention meets next Sunday at 1 30 PM in the Christian church at West Union. Review of quarter lessons by A W Wright and school reports by their superintendents. Officers listed: Co T Shawler president R S Dolson secretary.
The post office faced an unprecedented holiday rush as the local force worked hard to keep up. Postmaster Handy had an auto delivery wagon in service Monday and Tuesday delivering Christmas parcels.

A civil service examination for stenographers and typewriters serving government departments will be held at the Marshall post office on January 18.
The regular meeting of the Marshall Ministerial Association is rescheduled to January 8, replacing the next Tuesday session. Members are advised to note the new date and plan accordingly.
The committee on poor calls for applications from a man and wife to fill the roles of farm manager and housekeeper at the county poor farm in Marshall. Applications accepted at the county clerk's office until Friday February 1 1918 at 5 p.m. Salary to be fixed by the board of supervisors at their February 5 meeting. Marshall Red Cross Chapter nears 1200 new members as weather hindered canvassing. City teams lead with 140 and 134 members while a Dunlap church benefit play adds 1139 from admissions. New memberships total and fundraising updates accompany ongoing efforts through New Year.
A Washington dispatch reports government discovery of a large Bolshevik and anarchist plot to topple current regimes. It notes officials would tolerate agitation not hindering the war, though the piece questions how much progress departments have made based on senate committee testimony.
An Interior Department representative will be at the Marshall court house February 8 through 12 to instruct residents on the new income tax law. Married men with income $2000 or more and unmarried men with income $1000 or more fall under the law and face penalties for noncompliance. The agent will also be in Martinsville February 13 to 15 and in Casey February 1 to 19.
Buckner formerly of the county was convicted on a rape charge and sentenced to the penitentiary. The case was appealed to the state supreme court, which last week sustained the lower court ruling.
Rev H M Tipsword former president of Westfield College has been appointed president of Ewing College. The announcement cites his leadership in higher education and prior tenure at Westfield as qualification for the Ewing post.
Walter B. Wright of Indianapolis and Miss Cecil Hirschman of Marshall wed yesterday in the office of Esquire Craig the officiant.
Mrs. George Wallis died at relatives home in San Miguel California on Monday December 17 at age over 80 due to infirmities of age. Burial was in San Miguel. She went to California last July to live with relatives. Surviving are Miss Lizzie Wallis foster daughter of Terre Haute. Mr Wallis died about a year ago.

Members of the Congregational church and Sunday school held a joint Christmas service with the White Cross at the center. Children’s gifts were placed at its foot along with pledges of service for Christ through the church. The program included hymns readings recitations and instrumental music led by the pastor and superintendent. Next Sunday evening a stereopticon lecture on The Life of Christ is planned.
James Ho Davison born 1864 in Fffingham County died suddenly at home. Survived by wife Pau line and daughter Ada Ogle plus a step son Leonard King and three brothers and three sisters. Funeral at Evangelical church with Rev John Craig, burial Livingston cemetery.
James Claypool shares excerpts from Roy Claypool of Co A 2nd Meld Battalion Signal Corps AEF France describing mail delays and holiday shortages, meeting Chicago friends, plans to return, Liberty Bond purchases, and encouragement to write.
