Marshall Chamber honors 50-year local business pioneers

At a December dinner in the Masonic Temple Marshall Chamber of Commerce saluted seven longtime business men who built the city’s commerce and service backbone. Toastmaster Carl Heller traced Marshall’s origins naming Chief Justice John Marshall and shared local history, while Charlie Clapp of Kirchner Lumber recalled travel times and barter trades that shaped early commerce.

Burglars Target Westfield and Kansas Schools

Burglars entered Westfield High School Tuesday night damaging a safe dial but failing to enter. They obtained about five dollars in change from the office. The same burglars reportedly entered a Kansas grade school, with some money taken.

Hospital Patients In Union and Paria Hospitals

Mrs. Richard Darlington of east of Marshall recently entered Union Hospital for a major operation and is listed in room details. Mrs. Walter White is a patient at Paria Hospital. Russell Periaho of Casey, former Clark County sheriff, entered Union Hospital in Terre Haute for treatment of a heart ailment and is reported to be improving.

Marshall Woman Dies in Indianapolis Hospital

A Marshall woman died morning at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after several weeks as a patient. She is survived by husband Tom of Marshall Route 5, daughter Kathleen Drummond of Louisville Kentucky, son Robert Drummond of Terre Haute Indiana, and sister Mrs Bertha Snavely of West York Route 1. The body was moved to Prust Funeral Chapel West Union for services today at 1 30 p m with Rev H J Kemp. Burial in Medsker Cemetery. Friends may call.

Unusual Christmas for Tommy Cooper at Shriners Hospital

Tommy Allen Cooper, 19 months old, underwent outpatient treatment at Shriners Hospital in St Louis starting Dec 8 1953. Weekly visits through May 25 led to October 14 surgery completing his correction, now healthy at 2 1/2 years. Wayne Hollenbeck, a Shriner sponsor, praised the program open to any child under fourteen regardless of race creed or color.

Local Officer Returns Home After Receiving Silver Wings

Second Lt. Robert L. Simpson son of Dr and Mrs A H Simpson of Marshall earned his silver wings at Bryan Air Force Base Texas after completing basic jet pilot school. He holds a 1963 Indiana University accounting degree and entered U S Air Force pilot training in 1964. He will visit Marshall with his parents until about January 5.
