Monday night a truck loaded 60 to 70 bushels of soybeans from Harold Washburn's land in Melrose Township headed toward Marshall. The vehicle broke through a bridge southwest of Marshall and Bean spillage followed, attracting local authorities as they pursue leads with no arrests yet.
West Union Rebekahs elected officers for the coming year at the December 16 meeting. Noble Grand Neoma Arbuckle, Vice Grand Lola Snyder, Secretary Imogene Collier, Financial Secretary Irene Thompson, Treasurer Ethel Cline, Trustees John Van Fleet Walter Snyder Grace Nichols Carrie Ogle Jesse Thompson. Mrs. Jesse Thompson named delegate to the assembly. A Christmas party with gift exchange followed.
Arthur Hedden aged 70 of Greenup Kentucky died Monday at the Clark County Fair grounds in Marshall while shoeing a race horse. Coroner Don Hoad ruled death caused by coronary occlusion. Body moved to Bishop Funeral Home in Greenup after arrangements at Marrs Funeral Home.
The annual K. P. Christmas Treat for Marshall children will be held at 2 30 p m Saturday December 21 on the east side of the courthouse. All kids are welcome.
Charles Brandenstein of Marshall, 78, fell Wednesday crossing Seventh Street at Archer Avenue and broke his right hip. He was taken to Paris Hospital Thursday and reported in fair condition the next morning.
An appeal asks for used furniture and household items for the Jeff Payne family of Auburn who lost their home in a fire. Call Mrs. Ed Parker at 5697 to arrange pickup Saturday December 21 or earlier. The Paynes include two children Fred 11 and Phyllis 8 students at Marshall South Side School.
A three dot one hour Christmas program titled And There There Then Found Christ will be staged by teenagers at Emmanuel E U B Church Grand Turn on Saturday night December 21 at 7 00 p m. All welcome.
Jackie Lee Spraggins and Charlotte June Greenwell, both 21, are listed as marriage licensees from Caney and Martinsville respectively. Mr and Mrs Lloyd Pearce and daughters depart for a Florida vacation and plan to spend Christmas with a brother in Lumberton Mississippi. Joseph Perkins of North Central College Naperville will return home today to celebrate holidays with his mother Genevieve Perkins and grandmother Mary Washburn.
A Marshall high school senior, Ann Jensen, has been named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. She scored among the top 7,500 on the October 22 Scholarship Qualifying Test and now competes for one of about 800 final Merit Scholarships announced in May 1958.
Bethel No. 85 of the Jobs Daughters installed officers for the ensuing term. Honors Queen Nancy Lindley and senior princess Marilyn Russell led a ceremony with numerous officers then installed by Cartha Rennér and others. A reception followed in the dining room with purple and white colors and a Bible presentation to the honored queen.
Students from Marshall West Union and Westfield depart for Christmas from the University of Tatianasee. The break runs 1 00 p m today Friday December 20 to 1 00 p m Thursday January 2. Names listed include John Randolph Boyer Anne Burnett Theodore Earl Downs Rita Joan Findley Lois Ann Fox and many more from Marshall West Union and Westfield.
The North Center Community club will meet Friday December 20 at 7 30 at the school. A Christmas program by students will be presented. The menu features candy cookies nuts and beverages served by the club.
Last Monday Harry Reynolds, living north of Marshall, was helping Clyde Knowles Jr. with a corn hiker when he became entangled in the power takeoff. His hand and arm were badly bruised and he suffered a head injury. He was taken to Union Hospital Terre Haute for treatment but is now back home and improving.
The program has awarded ships in two years and the winners are enrolled in over 265 colleges. The competition is open to all US high schools including Alaska Canal Zone Hawaii Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and any high school senior may enter. Semifinalists numbered 7500, about one half of one percent of the national senior class with state representation by high school population.
Charles Berny returned from a Texas Oklahoma trip and closed a 300 acre land deal near Houston moving his family in three weeks. The Oliver church grounds receive $1800 funding and progress. Ruth Booth marries Arthur Poorman at Edwin Booth home. several marriage licenses listed in Marshall with ages and towns.
Forty years ago in 1917 a note from Merrick Cox to his son Percy in the U S Engineer Corps reports his safe arrival in France. The paper lists marriage licenses including William A Taggart of Chicago and Elma A Tyhurst of Martinsville and other couples from Wabash and Orange townships with scattered references to Marshall post office and Camp Johnston.
Thirty years ago in 1927 Miss Lucille Sockler and Everett Smitley joined in marriage at Grand Turn church at 7 o clock in the evening. Marriage licenses issued list Merle Willey of Casey and Stella Poe, Joseph Combs of Marshall and Bertha Nickles, Robert D White and Mildred L Wallace of nearby townships. May Nightlinger of Marshall and Harry McFall of Terre Haute wed in Chicago on Sunday. Mary Williamson of West Union and Foster Hornbrook were married in Newport Indiana. Margaret Kerr entertained twenty guests for a bridge party and announced her engagement to Oswald E Cooper of Cincinnati with a January wedding planned.
Obituary notes the death of Dr. James J. Rose a longtime Marshall physician on Archer avenue after months of illness. Also reported are: Omer Bradley wed to Catherine Hedges of Indianapolis. Margaret Wallis to Charles S Inge of Centra lia Illinois with wedding planned in January. birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs Elmer Renner at St Anthony Hospital Terre Haute. and Paul Baker injures a rib while handling a calf at Riley Indiana home of his parents.
Ten years after engagement Lorriane Phillips of Annapolis Maryland will marry Ensign James Moore Hornbrook son of Mr and Mrs J R Hornbrook. The ceremony is set for Saturday evening December 20 at St Annis Episcopal Church Annapolis. Frank Welah supervisor of Wabash township underwent an operation at Union Hospital Terre Haute last Saturday morning. A turkey dinner was given Wednesday.
First Lt Kent L McDaniel son of Mr and Mrs Claude W McDaniel Marshall TI reports to Vance Air Force Base for a five month course in basic single engine jet pilot training. Upon completion in May 1958 he will receive Air Force pilot wings. He entered active duty in 1955 after AFROTC and trained at Hondo Texas. His wife Marti Simer, a former Monticello Indiana resident, accompanies him.
Miss Elnora Raisner 38 of Lincoln and Susan Madden 80 of Marshall are named among Marshall area deaths with survivor lists. Services for Raisner were conducted at Marrs Funeral Home with burial in Marshall Cemetery. Madden’s rosary, Requiem Mass, and burial followed at St Marys Cemetery. William H Crossley 92 died at Christian Nursing Home. services at Moore and burial in Marshall Cemetery. William Shirley, stationed at Shaw AFB, visited Marshall parents for holidays.
A dinner and program were held at Nell's Restaurant to honor Grace Jones for long service with the Illinois Telephone Co. She started with the company on August 15, 1902. Nearby, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Graham celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary with a Clarksville Baptist church gathering and lunch attended by over a hundred relatives and friends.
The Congregational church will celebrate Christmas Eve with a 15 minute boys choir and girls dance choir prelude followed by a candlelight procession and hour long service led by Reverend Louis L. Miller. Music includes Gounod, Schubert, Adams and Staines pieces with no sermon. Creche illumination and altar flowers from Gertrude Shaw family. Town and surrounding communities invited to attend and be seated by 11 15.
The Board of Education met to review transportation figures with 99,175 miles logged and 7.4 mpg, and to report building phase completion except for a walk in refrigerator hooks. They approved issuing working cash fund bonds of 85,500 to cover outstanding claims and extend repayment over nine years at about 4 percent.
The Millcreek Home Bureau met December 4 in the Grand Turn church basement for its annual Christmas party. Anna Nichol presented the minor lesson Spirit of Christmas before noon. Members and guests shared a pot-luck dinner followed by a gift exchange and a major lesson Making the Most of Our Storage Space led by Imogene Norton with tips from others. The group plans a January 10 meeting at 10:30 at Flossie Maurer's home.
